The whole book is spent absolutely rooting for these characters to get together, but I won’t spoil the ending for future readers. And I’m pretty sure everyone knows a Poppy- brave, adventurous, and sometimes too go-with-the-flow for their own good. Everybody knows an Alex- the quiet guy who seems pretty laced up until he gets on the karaoke stage. Poppy and Alex are incredibly well fleshed out as characters, making this book a joy to read. While Alex seems uptight, he ends up making the perfect travel companion, complimenting Poppy’s “you only live once” vacation philosophy. People always say that you never really know someone until you travel with them, and in this case it seems to be true. The chapters that were interspersed throughout the book that detailed their vacations were a really excellent way to let the reader get to know the characters. Of course, Harry and Sally never traveled like Poppy and Alex. After all, these are two very different people who share a car ride that leads to a decade-long friendship that always might, just maybe, could be a relationship.

I mean that in the best way possible, since I absolutely love that movie, but it’s almost suspiciously similar. Okay, the beginning of this story is very When Harry Met Sally. But are Poppy and Alex just too different to remain best friends? Harry Met Sally And They Went On Vacation When Poppy gets the chance to meet Alex for one more summer trip, she’s determined to put things right. She has her dream job traveling the world, but her life feels empty. The estrangement leaves Poppy feeling adrift. Something happened in Croatia, and Poppy and Alex haven’t spoken in 2 years. Sometimes they travel far away, like their ill-fated last trip to Croatia. Sometimes they stay close, like when they visited New Orleans. Over the course of a decade, they take meet every summer to take a trip. Alex wears khakis, is afraid of flying, and would prefer to stay home with a good book. Poppy is a wanderlust who loves loud clothes and meeting new people.

Poppy and Alex have been best friends ever since they shared a car ride home from college ten years ago, but they couldn’t be more opposite.
